The Steadily-Growing Town Of Gilbert, Arizona

By Steve Sam Jones

In terms of population growth in the country, it's been the case for the last few decades that the Southwest and parts of the West have been growing greatly. A combination of affordable housing and mild climate has made for a building developer's dream scenario, which is exemplified in this case by the booming town of Gilbert, Arizona, it would seem.

As one of a number of ring suburbs of the much-larger city of Phoenix, Gilbert has more than doubled its size in less than a decade. In 2001, it counted around 100,000 people as residents. By the end of 2009, more than 210,000 people were living within its borders. Much of this is, no doubt, due to the easy availability of low-priced land and homes, as well as a mild winter climate and a low tax rate.

Though the town is much larger than many municipalities that classify themselves as cities, this particular Maricopa County municipality prefers to remain incorporated as a town, perhaps to retain an element of its old Southwest flavor. It was founded way back in 1891, when it was created as a railroad siding for a local rail line. The town then grew up around that siding.

Incorporation first took place in 1920, keeping the eponymous name it had been given, coming from the last name of the owner of the land under which the rail siding sat. There was a time of about 8 years in the early part of the 20th century when it was also known as the hay capitol of the world, for the quality and quantity of its hay output.

The town is comprised of 43 square miles of land, and is literally one town or city among a number in the metroplex that have been growing rapidly, especially over the last decade. Prices on most everything are low, and with the climate being generally warm even in the winter months, great numbers of retirees have been moving there to take advantage of those facts.

Median incomes -- both at the household and the family level -- are relatively high, with households reporting an annual rate of nearly 80,000 dollars while family median incomes come in at around 88,000 per year, according to 2007 figures. A particularly-impressive statistic is the town's extremely low incidence of crime, according to available FBI stats.

This Arizona town strives to be family-oriented and looks to the future with great anticipation. Despite its relatively large size, it still has a small-town feel to it that is quite impressive. Gilbert also benefits from a focus on education and a population base that participates greatly in the running of the town. In all, there's a great deal to like when it comes to this southwestern municipality. - 30451
